About the Robots.txt Generator

A robots.txt file sits at the root of your website and tells search engine crawlers which pages they may visit. This generator writes a correctly formatted file: choose whether to allow or block everything by default, list paths to keep out of crawlers' reach, add your sitemap URLs and set specific rules for individual bots.

Presets help with common jobs such as blocking AI training crawlers (GPTBot, CCBot, Google-Extended and others) or keeping admin and search pages out of the index.

How to use the Robots.txt Generator

  1. Choose the default rule for all crawlers.
  2. List paths to disallow, one per line, and add your sitemap URL.
  3. Optionally add bot-specific rules or apply a preset.
  4. Copy or download robots.txt and upload it to your site root.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put robots.txt?

In the root of your domain so it is available at https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Each subdomain needs its own file.

Does Disallow remove a page from Google?

Not reliably. Disallow stops crawling, but a blocked URL can still be indexed if other sites link to it. Use a noindex meta tag (on a crawlable page) to remove pages from search results.

Does Google respect Crawl-delay?

No. Googlebot ignores Crawl-delay, but Bing, Yandex and some other crawlers honour it.
