About the XML Formatter

The XML Formatter makes dense XML readable by putting each element on its own line with consistent indentation, and minifies it again when you need a compact version. It checks that the document is well-formed using your browser's XML parser and reports the problem if a tag is not closed or an attribute is malformed.

It works with any XML dialect, including SOAP envelopes, RSS and Atom feeds, sitemaps, Android layouts, Maven POM files and SVG images.

How to use the XML Formatter

  1. Paste your XML into the input box.
  2. Choose the indentation and click Format, or click Minify.
  3. Fix any reported errors, then copy or download the result.

Frequently asked questions

Does it validate against a schema (XSD)?

No. It checks that the XML is well-formed (correct nesting, quoting and closing tags). Schema validation against an XSD or DTD is not performed.

Are comments and CDATA kept?

Yes. Comments, CDATA sections and processing instructions such as <?xml version="1.0"?> are preserved.

Will formatting change text content?

Whitespace-only text between elements is reformatted. Text inside elements that contain other text is kept as is.
