JSON String Escape & Unescape is a 100% free, browser-based utility that enables you to escape text for json/js strings or unescape it back. Unlike traditional cloud converters, all processing executes locally on your device with zero server uploads, delivering immediate results and ironclad data privacy.
About the JSON String Escape & Unescape
When you put text inside a JSON value or a JavaScript string, quotes, backslashes, line breaks and control characters must be escaped. This tool converts multi-line text into a valid escaped string (for example a line break becomes \n and a quote becomes \"), and reverses the process to turn escaped strings from logs and API payloads back into readable text.

Frequently asked questions
Which characters are escaped?
Double quotes, backslashes and control characters such as line breaks (\n), carriage returns (\r) and tabs (\t). Optionally every non-ASCII character can be written as \uXXXX.
Can I unescape a string with surrounding quotes?
Yes. Surrounding double quotes are detected and removed automatically before unescaping.
Is the output valid for JavaScript too?
Yes. A JSON-escaped string is also a valid JavaScript string literal when wrapped in double quotes.
