About the Chmod Calculator

Every file on Linux, macOS and other Unix systems has read, write and execute permissions for its owner, its group and everyone else. The Chmod Calculator lets you tick the permissions you want and instantly see the numeric value (such as 755) and symbolic form (rwxr-xr-x).

It works in every direction: type a number or a symbolic string and the checkboxes update. Special bits (setuid, setgid and sticky) are supported, and the ready-to-run chmod command is shown for you to copy.

How to use the Chmod Calculator

  1. Tick read, write and execute for owner, group and others, or type a numeric value like 644.
  2. Optionally enable special bits such as setuid or the sticky bit.
  3. Copy the numeric value, symbolic string or the full chmod command.

Frequently asked questions

What does chmod 755 mean?

755 gives the owner read, write and execute (7 = 4+2+1), and gives the group and others read and execute (5 = 4+1). It is the typical permission for directories and executable scripts.

What is the difference between 644 and 755?

644 (rw-r--r--) lets the owner read and write while everyone else can only read; it is standard for regular files. 755 adds execute permission for everyone, which is needed for directories and programs.

Why should I avoid chmod 777?

777 lets every user on the system read, modify and execute the file. On a web server this can allow attackers to change your files, so use the most restrictive permissions that still work.
